Theo Nelson
Fellow
Theo joined the BIE in November 1963 and became a fellow in 1989.
He served as chairman of the Australasian division and was also secretary for 15 years. He has been a funeral director for well over 50 years.
Phil Martin
Fellow
Phil Martin qualified as an embalmer in 1972 and the following year became a Member of the BIE.
The Institute, in 1975, awarded Phil a year’s scholarship to study funeral service in Canada and after returning to the UK he qualified as a registered tutor of the BIE.
Since then much of Phil’s career in funeral service has been spent in the education sector both in the UK and Australia.
He was solely responsible for the design and writing of the first ‘wholly’ Australian embalming course, which today forms the basis of the current qualification.
Over the years he has assisted and mentored hundreds of students qualify as embalmers. He joined the Company of Fellows in 2005.
